START Madrid opened in 2008 as the first of several planned global satellite collaborations, and represents the first step in START’s goal to keep the development of anticancer agents operating 24 hours a day.
START Madrid is comprised of two separate sites, START Madrid - CIOCC and START Madrid – FJD. Both sites are fully dedicated to early drug development in partnership with START’s flagship site in San Antonio.
START Madrid - CIOCC is located in the Hospital Universitario Madrid Sanchinarro, Centro Integral Oncológico Clara Campal (CIOCC). It is the first and only comprehensive cancer center in Spain to operate within a general hospital and offers the most innovative Phase I cancer clinical trials program available in Spain’s capital city of six million.
START Madrid CIOCC is led by Emiliano Calvo, M.D., Ph.D., Director of Clinical Research. The site has 44 hospital rooms exclusively for oncology patients, plus an outpatient care room that currently cares for 200 new patients per month. This facility accommodates all type of early Phase 1 trials (FIH, FIC, Phase 1b, Phase 1b/2, DDI, molecular-based selection targeted drugs, tumor type specific expansion cohorts...), including Radioactive Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, and Excretion (ADME) pharmacokinetic studies.
START Madrid – FJD opened in 2014 is located in Hospital Universitario Fundacion Jimenez Diaz. It is led by Dr. Victor Moreno MD, PhD.
It is located within the major Hospital of the Oncohealth Institute. This Oncology Institute is constituted by four Hospitals: Hospital Fundación Jiménez Díaz, Rey Juan Carlos Hospital at Mostoles, Infanta Elena at Valdemoro and Hospital Público de Villalba. These four Hospitals are privately managed by Quiron-Salud, but is funded by the Spanish Government and attends patients covered by the National Health System.
START Madrid – FJD is an institutional priority of Fundación Jiménez Díaz (FJD), and for the Oncology Group. As a consequence, START Madrid-FJD is able to obtain daily referrals from these Oncologists consistent with selection criteria of our active studies. In addition, there are weekly Phase 1 meetings with the general oncology group and connected through videoconference system with the other three Hospitals of the group, at which time available slots are noted and recruitment of eligible patients is promoted. Almost two thousand new cancer patients come to the Oncology Group every year. Furthermore, START Madrid-FJD is located within a public Hospital and attends referrals from any other Hospitals from the National Health System, especially from the Madrid Community
The site has 35 hospital rooms, plus an outpatient care room with six chairs for patients. START Madrid – FJD treats an estimated 55 patients per month. This facility accommodates standard, as well as Radioactive Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, and Excretion (ADME) pharmacokinetic studies.
