START accepts donation from patient to support center in Madrid

START Madrid, Spain’s leading Phase I testing center for new anti-cancer drugs, has received an anonymous donation of $279,306 to support its operations.

START Madrid is affiliated with South Texas Accelerated Research Therapeutics (START) in San Antonio. START Madrid is located within the hospital Universitario Madrid Sanchinarro, Centro Integral Oncológico Clara Campal.

START Madrid started an oncology foundation in September. The donor, who asked to not be named publicly, gave the money in October. The donor was a patient at START Madrid.

“This is the first of other planned, future donations, and we are most grateful,” says Dr. Emiliano Calvo, director of clinical research for START Madrid. “This money will go toward bringing more innovative drugs and clinical trials to patients in Madrid.”

Before new drugs can be approved by U.S. and European regulators, the drugs must first be subjected to testing. Phase I testing signals a drug’s first controlled study in a patient population. For cancer patients, enrolling in such studies means that they have an opportunity of receiving some of the latest experimental cancer drugs.

San Antonio-based START conducts the world’s largest Phase I program for oncology drugs. More than 400 patients each year participate in Phase I clinical trials.
