San Antonio's START to team up with UT-Austin on cancer-fighting initiative

South Texas Accelerated Research Therapeutics (START) and The University of Texas at Austin's Department of Nutritional Sciences have entered into a collaborative agreement initiating a new Phase I drug development fellowship program.

This new collaboration, part of a larger program in translation research, was created to help train medical oncologists to become experts in the field of early-phase trials of anticancer therapeutics.

Dr. Wei Peng, a medical oncologist and clinical investigator from Fudan University in Shanghai, China, has been selected to serve as the program's first clinical research fellow. San Antonio-based START operates one of China's premier Phase I oncology programs at Fudan University.

"This is a very exciting opportunity for START as it allows us to mentor young investigators who can take their knowledge and expertise back to their respective countries, ultimately strengthening the world wide effort to accelerate the development of new agents," says Dr. Amita Patnaik, associate director of clinical research and director of the Phase I drug development fellowship program at START. "By training foreign scholars, we will be able to expand the knowledge of the international drug development community, and also facilitate collaborations with investigators on a global basis."
