San Antonio's START to open second clinical trials center in Spain

START Opens Second Site in Madrid, SpainOne of San Antonio's front-line forces in the fight against cancer is adding more international assets.

START (South Texas Accelerated Research Therapeutics) is opening a second Phase I clinical trials center in Madrid, Spain. The new center will be located in Hospital Fundacion Jimenez Diaz and led by Dr. Victor Moreno.

START operates a global cancer research network that is conducting the world's largest Phase I medical oncology program. The Alamo City-based organization opened its first European clinical trials center in 2008 in Spain's capital city.

Dr. Emiliano Calvo will serve as director of clinical research for the START Madrid Group.

Calvo says START's decision to open a second clinical trials center in Madrid "is a demonstration of the continued maturation and growth of our program from 2008 when it was launched."

START's two Madrid sites will work together to expand the volume of Phase I clinical trials and patients' access to innovative drugs in Spain. According to Calvo, the Madrid sites will share specialized staff, contracts and budgets, and will work in tandem to try and double the number of cancer patients who have access to and can benefit from START's ongoing clinical studies.

"The opening of our second Madrid site is an important milestone for START and ensures we can meet the needs of our patients in Spain, as well as fulfilling our mission to accelerate new drugs for the treatment and eventual cure of cancer," says START's director of clinical research, Dr. Anthony Tolcher.
